I wish I knew the answer, by the way. Personally, I've mounted knuckle hinges in all sorts of ways, often depending on whether I want to throw the door out from the face frame or provide some other clearance for design reasons. If you put the center of the pin right on the edge of the door, you stand the chance of having the door edge bind or rub against the frame. To my mind, it does look better though.
I think we all are influenced by typical passage door hinges, which are made to stick out half an inch or more from the jamb so the door will open 180° +/- without turning the casing into a highly effective fulcrum. :-)
