I thought I would start small and build my way up to a medium sized business. I had a decent plan and don't mind working hard; I just had no idea how hard and how long I would have to work to get a reasonably secure and reliable business and cash flow (I have to support a family of four). Another thing I learned is that I really enjoy working as part of a team with other people. Going out on my own was a learning experience; I hope you learn more than I did, and wish you the best of luck.

>Bloody A dang right! Brother, if you can for sake the benefits and "security" you get by working for the man and I say give it a shot. We spend some much of our lives "on the clock" it's sickening. Who was it who said something like The masses live in quiet desperation"? Heck with that, life is too short not to enjoy it.

It didn't work. That was over something like 15 months ago, and the puncture wounds in my back are still healing, but my business is finally reaching the point of paying a living wage again. It only takes about 75 to 80 hours a week now, a figure that will probably drop to 65 or 70 in the next year. Now, I'm not a pro woodworker, but a pro writer who emphasizes woodworking, which may be the best of all possible worlds.

The kicker: Long hours and all, I'm about 37 times as happy as I was in a corporate environment working for people with what I consider little talent and no outstanding morality.

In other words, good luck, and expect hard work and some setbacks and a lot of joy. Even if it eventually doesn't work, it's worth it.
