New project

jim_reed@marietta

>I have started on a grand project--18th cent corner cupboard from a Lester Margon drawing. It is basically two stacked boxes, so the project begins with the four ends. I figured everything would go better if I made the ends exactly the same size. Here they are (glued up poplar) rough cut and ready for trimming. I popped a few brads in them for stability (no glue) and will introduce them to Mr #7 today.

What brand is Mr. #7? I don't recognize the lever cap logo....Rob

U R Correct

>That big ole corrugated boy is a Cr*ftsman plane. It has no collector value, but it is a shop workhorse. A tiny spin on the large adjuster wheel makes it go from nothing to wispy. Good blade--never had it chatter.

>Thanks Jim and Angelo,

We don't see too many Craftsman planes up here. Think I've seen one or two in the seven years I've been, uhhh..., casually purchasing the occasional plane. Who cares about the name, as long as it works well...Rob

>My No. 6 is an old Craftsman with that logo. It's a good tool, which I got for free, kinda, from a friend (helped him move - all sweat equity). Exceed in its value-to-market-value ratio only by my Wards Master No. 4.

>Where do you find the time???? Keep posting the pictures, inspires me to find more time and do more with my time in the shop!

I am curious how you will handle the jointing at the corners, and for that matter the joinery. Will you use bisquicks????

Very Curious!

>Dem's look like bandsaw marks!! :)

Nice to see a plane in use which is "ordinary" .... gives me hope that I could do good work with my fancypants one some day.

I look forward to seeing more progress pictures.

>Looks like a fun project. Keep us posted on your progress. Do you have plans for finer wood for the faces and doors, or will you make it all from tuliptree and paint it?

I hope you don't mind, I borrowed the link to your photo and used it in a puzzle I posed over on the Trivia Forum.

Corner joints

jim_reed@marietta

>For the corners, I plan to 1)rough rip cut appropriate angle on BS, 2)use trusty ole #7 to finish up, 3)biscuit along the edge, 4)dado(bottom) and rabbet (top) ends using #46 and #93.

Cherry

jim_reed@marietta

>The original was walnut, but I am going to make mine out of cherry. I think I have just about enough wood in storage here to make it. The bottom door has two tombstone panels and the top has four arches for glass. Some of the decoration is fluted side panels. I think I am going to make planes and chisels just for this project.

Lots of time here

jim_reed@marietta

>I am a senior IT manager and have been out of work since January. Job search is slow and I have been plowing through wood stash making new stuff, repairing antiques and finishing five years worth of unfinished projects. So far I have made:

a cradle for new grandchild, secretary desk, pembroke table, side table and numerous antique fixes. Add to this over 600 specialty blades for my blade business and you will see that I have been pretty busy. Job search has picked up during the last few weeks and I might be down to my last days of fun. WELL, what a long strange trip it has been!
