Stanley 112 vs 12 scraper

>Would like to hear from people that have used both and what the practical differences are. I have been watching Ebay for a 112 for a while not but still waiting on good deal.
Due to the prices I am giving the #12 and 12 1/2's a second look. Just wondering how much easier a 112 is to use if any at all.

From my understanding, a Stanley 112 will be as much or more than the Lee Valley plane. If the price is right, I suggest getting one of those.
I don't know anything about the #12. Perhaps Mr. Leach knows something: #12 Veneer scraper
Now if you *want* an older tool (nothing wrong with that), then ignore my advice.

Veritas Scraper Plane

>I have had the Veritas scraper plane since Christmas. Lately, I have really been putting it through the paces, scraping glue lines in glued up boards, lots of boards. THe plane is superb, and it has an advantage over the 112; you can put a bow in the iron that helps eliminate edge lines. It just takes a couple light passes with a burnisher to get a nice cutting edge. You have to play a bit with adjustments at first, just like any scraper plane, but once you get it you will get shavings like this.

>The 12 will have the adjustment as the 112 (12 1/4 and 12 1/2). I perfer the footprint of the 112 over the 12's (it's longer, is held like a plane and not a scraper). Good luck trying to find a 112 on on the bay, they are a "collectors" item and go for a preium. You can ger a LN 112 for less than a Stanley most of the time. I got a bladeless Stanlet 112 for less than a LN (no LV version at the time) and put a hock iron in it, it works fawlessly. There is a learning curve to these planes, depending on the indvidual it can be quite daunting. I never realy had a problem setting one up, just lucky I guess.
That said, you might want to try an Stanley 80 or equlivent or even a LN85. These are simple to set up because of the lack of adjustments and are fine workers. I'd stay away from the No. 81 it's handles are low and it can be a real knuckle dragger DAMHIKT. Lot's of choices out there.

>I have a #12 I picked up off ebay a few months ago and I love it. I have one that was altered by adding a rosewood sole - which I had to replace. OTOH, it came with 3 blades, 2 Stanely and 1 Atkins. I'm still getting the knack of using it - keeping a grip at the end of a board can a bit tricky.
I've been using it on some Honduran rosewood that followed me home (at my wife's insistence) when I got the rosewood to replace the sole on the #12. (Is that something like cannibalism?)
I don't have a regular scraper plane of any sort, however. I would think that a scraper plane would make the stroke at the end a board easier to control. But the #12 really does work well and is a lot less painful on the hands than a handheld scraper.

>It depends on how the wood looks when I get done. Usually the wood looks good enough to skip sanding. If I do feel I have to sand, it's usually with 220 grit. I normally reserve the sandpaper for the finish though.
