Honing on Aluminum?

Joe Hurst

>Hey Guys-

I saw this tip printed somewhere's...either Fine Wood or BP...and I'm wondering if any of you has tried it out.

The tipster suggested honing blades on a piece of plate aluminum. His reasoning was that the aluminum oxide on the surface was harder and finer than his other sharpening stones.

Sadly, I don't have a chunk of AL sitting around to test this one out. I suspect you would need to be careful not to scratch the Aluminum (pull the blade toward you, rather than push?), but it sounds like it might have merit.

At any rate, a scrap piece of AL is significantly cheaper than diamond paste, and would remain flat (unlike MDF).
