Message from the underworld?

Bob Hackett

>I found some time to work on some of my latest dump finds this morning.Among these finds was an adz head with little wear but alot of rust.Being a sucker for "shin hoes" I thought I`d try to grind the pits out before I just cut it and resteeled.

The pits ground out nicely and I proceeded to the other side to see if a maker`s mark was still visible. It was and that was the scary part.Under the rust,in bold letters it says HACK DEVIL,plain as day.

Please tell me someone knows something about this mark.If not I`m taking it as a sign to lay off the dump for awhile.

I`d think `ol Red was trying to scare me off if it wasn`t invisible till I ground the rust off.

NEVER! I'm FINALLY going to start moving tomorrow. I have a 3 storie 40 x 24' barn that I've been squirreling away "Dump Finds" in for 18 years. In the past couple of weeks I've made six trips with "RETURNS". Do I stop picking ? H$LL NO!!!!!! I just came off two great days down in the dump. (I did slide one load into our storage unit, shouldn't be noticed until mid-week, next week) ssshhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!

I did find SWMBO a 4' antique spinning wheel today, that should take some of the heat off.

Grinding rust off?! Bob, what on Gods Green Earth are you thinking? Why take a chance of oblivarating some words by grinding? You need to be zapping first to uncover any hidden words. Grinding, I say boy, you got wrong boy, all wrong, zapping boy, ya' need to be zapping. (Done in my best Foghorn Leghorn)

>Egads man, returning stuff to the dump?! Moving from a place that has a 3 story 24x40 barn?! I'm about to go into convulsions due to pain over-load from just THINKING about it.

Please ease my pain by at least telling us about the goodies that got from the dump over the past 2 days.

O-K Yesterday I found a 3' sign bracket on a 4" post. I had my socket set in the truck to seperate the bracket from the post, but the socket wrench wasn't long enough to break the nuts, so I looked around for a piece of pipe for a cheater. I kicked a pile and out popped an 18", 1/2 drive socket wrench. NUTS BROKE!

This after pulling about 5 lbs of mixed hardware, a boot jack, Large box of blankets for padding for the move, SWMBO pack all of our exacts and there somewhere in the storage unit. A Tory Built Mulch mower with a broken handle, which mean the mower still works.

Today I found that 4' spinning wheel, a day pack from Norway, and based on the airline tag on it, from the 60's, in mint condition. more hardware. and I got back to the office just in time to catch the guy who I tuned a # 9 1/4 for last week who gave me a 3/4" auger bit on a wooden cross handle.

All this and last week I pulled a 10' John boat out without any holes in it and a 5" "Long Pioneer Box". This box was the Bane of my military career. It contained shovels, picks and other impliments of destrction and weighted about 300 lbs full and if one low life Rural Carrier hadn't slowed me up It would have been full when I got there. As it was the only thing that was left was a Hydralic Cable Cutter. Not a bad week, there was more but those are the highlights.

The Maine report...

Bob Hackett

>Picture the sound of morse code in the background and me dressed as a news anchor sitting at a desk(GADS!)Alright,I scared myself back to reality.

Besides the dreaded"HACK DEVIL" which I`m kinda warming up to(SWMBO thinks it`s funny).I hauled a dive compressor(no motor)that works,a brand new spa pump(whoever dropped it off replaced the whole system and left the new pump on top, that`s all I took),9 brand new art deco solid brass drawer pulls(why are there always an odd number?),3 air drills and an air sander that only needed oil and an almost new worm drive Skilsaw w/brand new blade(I left my number with the recycling techs in case a contractor came back looking for it).

The foreman scored himself an Echo backpack blower that works just fine(he used it to sweep down the wood scrap area). He said an old gent asked if it was OK to drop it off by the building. The foreman asked if it was seized up.The old guy told him it worked fine, even had a full tank of premix.Seems it was just too heavy for him to lug around anymore.

I also just missed a clawfoot tub w/faucet and an antique apothicary case that was nearly 7 feet long. The guy who dropped it off was moving and had no place to put it.Seems his wife put too high a price on it and it didn`t sell at the tag sale so he brought it down to the dump.Go figure.

To quote Steely Dan"The things they think are useless I can`t understand".

And it`s only Wed.,things don`t really start picking up till Friday.

Good, now I can take this dang suit off and climb out from behind this desk.Glad that`s over!

Sour grapes?

Bob Hackett

>Don`t feel bad Ernie.I have yet to see any dumpsters brimming with hardwood up here.If there are any,I`m sure the kindling gatherers are keeping them under wraps.

At least alittle of these dump finds are going to be headed your way in a slightly modified form.I just need to heal up enough to do some final work or just get my eldest to stay home long enough to help.

Alot of what I drag home gets cleaned and tuned and sent back to work by way of friends and aquaintances. The problem is that this usually has a snowball effect.Later today I have to go and look at a 16" planer that someone took apart and then left to rust. It`s an old flat belt model so there`s no hope of an owner`s manual. The fellow that owns it said that if I couldn`t use it he was sure I could find someone who could.

>Ernie it not all Wine and Roses. I just spent about 4 hrs Driving, loading, unloading and hauling just some of my hardware into the basement. One more day of hauling and I'll have the shop floor emptied. Then I can start on the 3rd and 1st floors of the barn with nine days to go before signing off on the old house.

I've got a two car garage here that is already full.

8 loads with 12x6 trailer on my truck plus 2 more without.

It's going to be one hell-of-a "Moved-didn't Fit" sale. Hopefully enough to buy a new 18" Bandsaw, after all SWMBO got a hot. tub,
