>Junk store planes can be treasures, doorstops or anything inbetween. So can intact planes made at different times from the same manufacturer. I'd hate to see you get put off by ending up with something that can't even be tuned to perform well. Read the Patrick's B&G section on #3 planes in the #1 to #8 bench plane section first. And I'd stick to Stanley, Union, Sargent or Millers Falls to get started. End up with some off brand generic like Corsair & you'll be scratching your head wondering what all the fuss is about. If you can find a local plane fan, he/she would probably show you some things to help you get started right. Good luck!!!
