>I haven't been happy with the 1/8" mouth opening on my Millers Falls #7 skew block plane. After some thought I came up with the idea of shimming the blade bed. I used a piece of arborite cut to size and thickness and siliconed it in place. Silicone seems to hold it well enough in place and has the advantage of easily reversing this modification. The added thickness on the blade bed lowers the angle and allows the blade to be advanced forward, thereby closing the mouth opening. The resulting opening is now only about 1/32". Works beautifully. I'm wondering if anyone else has tried something similar? I noticed I do get nice fine shavings, but I need to use it some more for a better assessment of the modification.

I did the same on my Stanley #140. I shimmed the bed with a Stanley knife (exacto knife) blade, holding it down with a microscopic smear of contact glue. Then added a LN blade. The result is a very tight mouth that can take very fine shavings. I had had the same brainwave as you about 6 months ago, wrote in suggesting (I think) a piece of wood veneer. The idea of a thin metal knife blade came from another contributor, I think it was Lyn.

Question for you. Does LN make a blade that fits your #140 including the row of grooves on the underside of the blade that engages the depth adjustor? If so, I'm wondering if they make one that would fit my Millers Falls #7 ?

The blade I obtained was the "Stanley Replacement" for #140. This is nearly as thick as the standard LN blade (MUCH thicker than the Stanley). It has the correct adjustment ribs. I cannot speak for MF, however. But if the MF is the same as the Stanley, then ....
