Record M146 Holdfast before they're gone

Christopher Schwarz

>I've been watching Record products slowly disappear from the market these last few weeks. In fact, I bought one of the last big quick-release vises I could find (if you know where more are, please let me know).

In any case, I picked up one of the Record M146 holdfasts from ebay this week for $12.95 plus shipping (all told about $20).

I'm building a compact high bench designed for hand-dovetailing and mortising in the coming months (more on that later) and thought the M146 would be ideal. It showed up in the mail today and boy is it nice. I mean, it's *really* nice. The photo on ebay from the seller doesn't really do it justice.

Soon these will be gone and we'll have to settle for stuff from overseas that's close but not spot on -- or pay a premium for nice stuff from some of the last domestic makers. If you *ever* think you might want one of these, you should check it out. Search for "record holdfast" and you'll find them.

I have absolutely no connection to the seller, etc.

It's a bittersweet bargain, all-in-all.

No big ones that I can find *LINK*

>Garrett,

Last I checked on the LV website, they were out of the big 10" quick-release ones it says they are discontinued. Am I not looking in the right place?

>Thanks Chris, I picked one up. I'd been looking for one for a while.

Glad to hear they are nice -- you're right -- the picture made them look pretty bad.

If I remember right, Mike R. was looking for one as well.

Record/Marples M146 Holdfast ?

Clay C in Miami

>Odd - I bought this same holdfast, from the same seller - as a Marples M146. Below is the photo, it's certainly the same holdfast ... and, aren't Record items all blue?

So ... was the one you received in a Record box, or a Marples box? Is it the green of the photo? (My Marples is.)

My guess would've been that they just botched the item description, and what they're shipping is indeed Marples holdfasts - but maybe Record rebranded some Marples stuff?

Can't comment on the item - the reason I still have the box is I haven't gotten tuit.

Certainly mine looks like the shaft will require the roughly 1/8" thick coat of green paint removed before it'd grip(sigh).

>Marples and Record are/were one and the same. Some things are blue and some are green. Mine is green and in the original Marples box. I've found the M146 to work fine without cleaning the paint.

The quality of casting and machining exceeds all the Chinese and Taiwanese vise hardware I've had my hands on.

>Good point. Whenever I travel to the UK and eat at a restaurant I scan the imported beer list out of force of habit.

"Coors!" I'll say. "What the!"

Seriously, tell us more about your dovetailing/mortising bench!
