How is this joint made?

>In many of the writing slopes I've seen pictures of (sure do wish I could see one in the flesh!)the wood surrounding the edges of the writing surface appears to be mitered together at the corners as is shown in the picture below.

However, as will be seen in the photo in the next message (sorry, I don't know how to put more than one photo in a message), when viewed from the back side, clearly there is no miter, looks like a breadboard with end caps. How do they do that?

>I have repaired many antique writing boxes and have noticed that the construction varies. It was a popular item and was made by many using various techniques. As I recall, most of them were T&G, spline or lap joints. Most used veneer on the writing surface. I think the sequence was to apply the leather writing surface, apply veneer, and then trim veneer edges. Seems like a quick way to slap it together. Good luck with yours.
