I think the seller's problem is that he's asking for collector-size money, but he doesn't understand plane typing--or else he does understand, but the plane is not a consistent type. If he can claim that plane is consistent with respect to type, I think he'll get his money.

>I am sure the seller has a copy of the Walters guide to Stanley values where a 608 flat side is listed at $125-$300 so he figured he would put it just under top dollar. Is a mistake i think on ebay to start your item off high instead of low and using a reserve as I feel it puts off bidders. Is just like at a live auction, who wants to jump in at the first high bid asked instead of waiting to it starts lower. Also the more people that bid the more the competition comes into it and is always easier to think,"Well if that guy is willing to pay that it must be worth just a little bit more"
Looking on ebays completed auctions the highest priced 608 went for about $190 it seems and didn't apear quite as nice as this one.I am guessing if this guy started his off at $5 it would go for about $225 or maybe a little bit higher.I really feel that about the highest price for something like this will probably be got on ebay and it is a mistake to try to hold out for "Top Dollar" but that is the sellers,[or in this case non seller!] bussiness. Was funny but found out that most Bed Rock sellers on ebay by far spell Bed Rock wrong listing it as one word,Bedrock, when in fact it is two.At least that is how Stanley wrote it in thier catalogs. Is always a rare event when I can correct someones spelling !.
Is $299 to much for this plane?, probably , I think you could get an example cheaper, but when you think what a LN 608 repro goes for maybe it isn't to bad to pay that for an original after all, eh?......Todd
