Record 044 Question

Don Thompson, Cutler Ridge, South of Miami FL

>I just received a Record 044 plow plane that I bought on eBay. The castings are pretty much a uniform medium-dark grey, except for the skate. Is this bare iron? Did the plating evaporate? It is not rusty or pitted anywhere, so it is not a problem. I am trying to figure out how to treat it.

BTW, it has all eight cutters, in the original cutter box.

>The skate was machined, and is not plated.

(or maybe it was plated and they machined it off :-)

Nice tool (the best handling plough available, of the ones I've used)

>I took another look, in the light of day. There are little speckles of plating lefte on some areas. The rest seems to have just evaporated.(?) No rust, no flaking chips of plating, just iron. Weird.

Has he? Heh heh, he's practically gone into the wilderness to preach about its wonders to the heathen :~)
