>Hello All
I just picked up my first Bedrock (605 1/2)and I have grin that just won't go away. The plane is in pretty good condition but on the heel & toe where the japanning is worn, there is some rust. Because I want to use this and just put it on a shelf . . . Should I rejapan it, or try rust converter just on rusted spots? Or do you have any suggestions on clean up and rust stoppage?

>I'm sure some people would disagree, but for a user plane I like to keep it fast , cheap & simple. You could just give it a shot on a wire wheel (not too coarse wire) and top it off with a little WD40. Instead of WD40 you could prime it with spray-on cold galvanizing primer - 97% zinc, 3% epoxy - and brush on some black enamel. Sherwin-Williams carries the primer and the zinc helps prevent further rust from spreading as a wire wheel won't get every single bit. I've also had good luck with a non-silicone spray for cast iron tablesaws found in some catalogs. It helps prevent rust & can be used on the sole.

>YOu can spend as much or as little time as you want. I use Brillo/SOS pads to clean off rust and then wax the unpainted surfaces; works fine, gets the job done quickly.
Shiny is nice, but takes longer. Some people can't stand to drive a pickup truck that's not waxed; others (I raise my hand) care mainly that the wheels won't fall off, and are fine with ugly if it gets the job done.
