>My son and daughter-in-law surprised me with a gift of a matched set of 1/2" wooden tongue and groove planes in mint condition. I am much more familiar with cast iron planes. What would this set be used for, thin panels?

>Nice set. They make a tongue and groove on 1/2" thickness wood, as might be used for the back of a cabinet. 7/8" is the most common size of these matched sets.
Try the woodies, you'll like them.
