Does anyone know of a Canadian chisel maker?

Sean Evoy in Ottawa

>This may seem an odd question, but I am wondering if there are any Canadian chisel makers out there. The US seems to have a number of small, high-end chisel makers like Barr and (sometime in the future) L-N. I know that L-V has a house brand and that Shepherd Tools sells some octagonal-handled London pattern chisels, but I have yet to locate anyone manufacturing them in Canada. Is there anyone?

>Thanks Dan,

But in both those cases, they are reselling chisels. There are small saw makers and plane makers, there just does not seem to be any chisel makers. I was wondering if there are any chisel-equivalents of Adria or Spehar Toolworks. I guess not.

>Lee Valley says in their catalog that they have the Yeung Chan detail chisels and their skew chisels made by a Canadian knife maker named Paul Beebe. I do not know if he offers other chisels for sale directly. But according to Lee Valley he is a Canadian if nationality is that important. Maybe I should consider sending my Adria saw back to Canada and buying an American Lie-Nielsen saw? No, I'll keep my un-American saw.

>Russell,

Couldn't agree with you more!

But if you ever feel the need to send the saw back to Canada be sure to send it addressed to me!

>Sean,

Yes, Andre Milette in Quebec makes specialty chisels (and other tools such as planes and gouges) for the violin and bowmaking trades. He can be reached at:

Andre Milette

491 Place Bellevue

Pt-du-Lac, Quebec, Canada, G0X1Z0

819-377-1588

He can send you a set of printed sheets showing all the chisels he can offer. I personally have not yet purchased from Andre, but many of my friends have and they very much like his tools.

>Russel,

I'd happily accept the donation of your saw, but I just bought one myself. My question was not based on some misguided sense of economic nationalism, just simple pragmatism. It costs me a whole lot more to do business with American tool-makers because of the exchange rate. I probably should have stated that up-front. No slight was intended.
