Catalpa for carving

Tom Sontag - St. Louis

>I have a catalpa log I want to cut into carving blanks for sale. What sizes should I shoot for? If I can get some 4-6" thick stuff, how long should I cut them? What about length for the the 8" x 8" ones?

Any thoughts welcome. I realize this is not a carving forum, but this is the closest I know of. Anyone know a forum that specializes in wood carving?

>That is a difficult question as carvers all want something different. My BIL is a really good carver I cut logs for him. 4"x6" is good size. Leave the logs long you can always cut them into chunks. I cut my basswood into 4x6x18" sells OK. The Butternut I cut 8X8X8'6" I have found that almost any size will sell if you price it right
