What wood should I use?

What wood should I use?

Rob from Kansas

>I'm trying to finish up a nightstand made of solid and veneered Cherry. For the drawer front I have used some very nice fiddle back Sycamore. I'm thinking of using a dark red cock beading around the drawer for contrast. Any suggestions of a species that would be a good combination between the cherry & sycamore? Hopefully not too expensive and relitively accessable.

Any suggestions/comments will be welcome.

Thanks

>Purpleheart comes to mind for dark reddish and is reasonably cheap and available (things I can appreciate about both wood and women), but I'm thinking perhaps a light wood like maple may set off the sycamore better without making the piece too busy.

>Is it purpleheart or paduk that darkens to more of a brown as it ages?

I can get some nice fiddleback soft maple. I'll make a sample and see how that looks.

Thanks

>I've always liked bloodwood for a dark wood, or redheart for a brighter red. Be careful with finishing so you don't smear the red onto the lighter wood. Seal it with shellac before installing it.

>Didn't you see the car size pile of rippings? I have a piece of fiddleback with nice figure I saved from the pile. Good thing is it's usually just the right size (4/4x1/2x8-10ft).

A sale tomorrow morning the 18th?

I got word my grandfather isn't doing too well so I'm going down to see him this afternoon. I want to make sure I finish that jewerly box with his walnut to give to my mom before he's gone. My grandmother never got to see the nightstand I made before she died & I've regretted that for the last couple years. So to keep his spirits up I'm going to work on it with him and try to have him give it to her this Sunday.
