Ontario WW Show Gloats

Rossmoor Galoot

>I volunteered to help Ellis in the "Sawdust Cafe" on Saturday at the Ontario Woodworking Show. Little did I know I was in for an experience. If you haven't had the chance to spend any time with Ellis Walentine, he's quite a character and seems to know everyone who's anyone in woodworking.

When I arrived, Ellis told us (another volunteer and I) that there was a change in plans and we wouldn't be needed as volunteers but that he appreciated our willingness to help and wanted to introduce us to some people. To make a long story short, Ellis introduced us as his "Wood Central Goombahs" to most of the woodworking luminaries at the show including Toshio Odate, Steve Shanesy (the editor of Popular Woodworking), and Sam Maloof. The high point of the day was when Ellis arranged a lunch for us with David Marks!

Parting after lunch, I looked up the Fine Tool Journal booth and bought an LN 140 skew rabbet block from Clarence. All in all a great day!

>Thanks for your kind comments, Don. It was great to meet you and the other WC "goombahs" at the show. It's always a treat for me to put names with faces and to show you guys around.

I'm on the road without benefit of uploading or photo processing capabilities, so I won't have shots of the show available for you until at least Thursday.

Hope to see you again next time.

>Jim,

Don't know if you are still interested, but here is a photo of David Marks, a fellow Centralian (nameless, out of respect for his privacy), and myself. I'm the one on the right. This photo was taken outside of "Cowboy Burgers and BBQ" at the Ontario WW Show.

>Hi Rossmoor,

I've gotta ask. Is your nom-de-plume derived from residing in the town of Rossmoor? I grew up in that sleepy middle-class extension of Los Alamitos, so I was just curious if that's where you're at. Since you are writing about the Ontario WW show, you are obviously in that region.

>Paul,

I do call Rossmoor home. We have lived here 12 years now after relocating from Rhode Island. My wife and I both grew up near Chicago and loved Rossmoor for its midwestern feel and good school system. If you had told me that some day my garage shop would have to include space for my son's longboard I would have thought "no way" and yet there it sits, right next to my drawing board! My boys now all consider themselves true Californians.

>Hi Rossmoor,

I know what you mean about the place. It did have a calm and "homey" feel. My folks bought into there when it was new and their Long Beach home was removed to build the 405 freeway. I lived there for 25 years on Walker Lee Dr. I covered about 1/4 of the town on my paper route, so I knew it well.

Thanks for helping down memory lane...

>Ontario and Rossmoor are not in Canada? And here I was thinking what a cold WW show that must have been.
