hand plane japanning

>I have a couple of old Stanley planes that I purchased to use as workers not to collect.

They were in bad condition, as most of the japanning was damaged, but other wise are great tools.

I have painted them with appliance enamel; I was trying to get a hard durable finish. Needless to say it does not match the original japanning for durability. Is there a product to apply, which would be close to the original japanning if not the same? Or any other suggestions for a HARD & DURABLE finish?

Thanks
