Your second question is a variant of that old saying about "give a kid a hammer, and everything s/he finds is a nail." If the longest plane you've got is a #6, you'll use it for long plane purposes.

I do find that there's a discernible difference in effectiveness for jointing between my #6 (which I love and use often) and my #8, in favor of the longer plane.

If you were a masochist, you could joint boards with a block plane successfully.

So, my answer is that a jointer plane gathers more rust than others in your shop - if learn how to use a plane properly, a No6 will see you out without the expense of a jointer.

But then again, if the money's burning a hole in your pocket and you want to buy a jointer, either a No 7 or No8 will suffice - I'd say weight of the plane (swinging a No8 for extended periods is tiring) and cost where two reasons that the No.8 were discontinued before the No7.
