Lee Valley = worlds best customer service

Paul M. in San Diego

>I bought lots of stuff from Lee Valley this last Christmas. Garden stuff for two sister-in-laws, tools for my brother, (tools for myself!)...

Imagine my surprise when I received a letter with a check for a few bucks from Lee Valley last night. I didn't return anything or have any complaints, so this was surprising. Then I read the letter:

"Dear Customer,

The price of the above-noted product has been reduced in our 2004 Garden Tools Catalogue. As a result of your recent purchase of this item, and in keeping with our guidelines on price reductions, we have enclosed a refund for the difference in price (plus applicable taxes)"

I'm very impressed. I've never seen ANY company do this out of the blue before. Better still, my wife is very impressed, which means more tool buying opportunities for me! You can bet that I'll return again!

>I was pleasantly surprised to find the two spoke shaves I ordered Monday afternoon waiting for me at the post office this morning. I've learned to not expect great things from the Canadian postal service. (Come to find out, they shipped them from Ogdensburg "so far upstate that it is *practically* Canada", NY.)

Greg -who hopes it warms up enough this weekend that the shop woodstove has a chance to heat the place up enough to allow removal of at least the gloves.

>Those shaves are pretty addictive. I've had mine a week and am finding all kinds of uses for them. I was really surprised how much I liked the flat bottom. I used it to shave endgrain on some small oak boxes I was making. It worked better than my blockplane. I'm curious to hear what your experiences are.

>I just got mine about 20 minutes ago....

I will have a very busy weekend since:

1) the shaves came in

2) last night my shiny new LN 60 1/2 R plane came in

3) I am closing in on finishing my bench (hanging drawers in the tool cabinet in the base this evening ).

way too much to do!

>The flat one is really good. I have started a few saw handles and it's super if there was another flat bottomed one twice as big I would put most of my scrapers on the shelf.

>I have to agree about Lee Valley customer service. It's kind of easy to have a happy customer when things go right. It's really a test of a companies customer service when there's a problem or complaint.

I ordered a backsaw from them and when I received it, found it was exactly the same model that I could've gotten locally for $15 cheaper. The reason I ordered it in the first place was that you couldn't tell from the catalog whether it was a different saw or not. I figured I would trust that it was a better saw and ordered it.

When I recieved the saw and realized that it was the same model, I repacked it and enclosed a letter with my reasons for returning it. Basically, saying that because the photo and description weren't clear in describing the model and I was able to buy the same model locally much cheaper. I also expressed some dissatisfaction with how it was marketed.

I figured that would the end of it, but about a week later I received a letter from Mr. Lee apologizing for the problem, crediting my account and explaining a bit on how those things happen.

I was impressed, very impressed... that moved me from being a disgruntled customer who was probably done with the company back into the ranks of satisfied customer. It's amazing how important a contact like that is and what it can do for business. I may not be a big client, but who knows what the future holds, I certainly recommend them to anyone considering quality tools.

>I ordered a Veritas Low Angle Smoother from them a month or so back ie 10 days before Christmas. A mistake was made and I got a Low Angle Block instead. I called them, they sent me the correct plane by priority FedEx and trusted me to return the Block Plane at my leisure. It meant I actually finished my Wife's present... no dog-house for me!
