Just a note to let you know you are not alone.I have no apparent(I think) use for a spokeshave at this time,nor a real understanding of what and when to use one,BUT they look so nice and well made I am having a hard time NOT buying them.

I know some people at WoodCentral have them and like them (LN and Boggs no surprise). The only complaints I've gleened is that they are better suited to finish work.

I haven't tried the throat shims (color coded for size) and eventually will. In my experience (and bias) the throat opening hasn't made a big difference. I use my spokeshaves most often for concave curves where the geometry of blade angle, points of contact, and wood grain can make every situation unique. Sometimes a wider throat (for me) does a better job of clearing the uneven chunks left after bandsawing.

That being said, the flat bottom has worked like a petite block plane. It took thin shavings and left a glassy surface without any shims.

Like any new tool, I still have a bit to learn about their personalities. I'm still getting used to the adjusters and am surprised that I actually like them (who knew). I also like how easy it is to pop the blade out and return it to its original position. I am amazed Lee Valley has packed these many features into such a resonably priced (pair of) spokeshaves.

>Sounds corny, but if you don't have a tool you tend to avoid making things that require it. Once I had some well performing spoke shaves I seem to find all sorts of ways to use them, including making the occasional handle. A lot of what you might have used a file or rasp for you will now do 10X faster with a shave.

Or as my grandfather once told me the best things in life have curves (I think he was talking about woodworking). Pick up a good spokeshave and you'll be surprised how often you use it.

I sawed it off clean, and, while she watched in the carport, shaved the stub to fit into the socket on the rake.

I was quite proud of myself, and commented on the obvious utility of elements of my handtool collection. ;-)

I have both the Bogg's shaves from LN and I have the curved small shave.

I found that the Bogg's shaves are indeed for fine cuts. They do a nice job in that area....

Form and Functionally they look a lot like the pair of LN Boggs shaves, perhaps not as purdy, but you can adjust the throats of the LV ones, and they come with an adjustment mechanism, and a place to put your thumbs. The round one has more radius than the LN Boggs, I can tell from the picture (you can hardly tell there is any radius on the Boggs, but its there, and in use is functional compared to trying to do it all with the flat one).

Did anyone mention that you could get the two LV's for less than the price of one LN Boggs? Looks like another great well thought and engineered tool offering from LV, and I'm having no luck resisting adding them to my coll ^h^h^h^h stable of basic, essential tools. (This, despite the post Christmas condition of my finances)

(Kinda like accessorising) Yeah, the price is pretty amazing. Wait til you see them in person. Bronze is pretty, but iron makes a serious shave and these really are good looking in person. Remember, its not too late to return those unwanted presents!

I admit I do have a number of shaves; 6 currently ... soon to be 8, then it will be 7 after I give one to my brother.

However, I know a number of people on here have many more than I do.

One of the biggest lessons I learned about hand tools is to buy quality in bulk!
