>This year two of my nieces and nephews made presents in my shop for Grandma. Here�s two pictures of my 10 year old niece making her present.
She scroll-sawed the outline of a Christmas tree out of a basswood blank. She then hand-carved the profile of the boughs using a fishtail gouge, and added needling with a small v-gouge. I think she enjoyed painting the tree the most. After she was done, I applied a few coats of lacquer to shine things up.
This was about a three hour long project. I think she enjoyed it, and Grandma proudly placed the tree on the Mantle.
My 6-year-old nephew made a similar project, without any carving. He cut an Angel out of a square of Baltic birch plywood, then painted the Angel. The cut-off material became the stand for the Angel, which he painted sky-blue with white clouds. Very nice and quite good for a 6-year-old; sorry no pictures. It also earned a place on the Mantle.
My 12-year-old nephew also came over and spent two weekends building a �valuables� box out out of MDF. No handtools were used except for a chisel. We learned that I hate using MDF. He learned not to scratch his nose when holding a sharp chisel in his hand � he got a small cut on the lip. He later got back at the chisel by finding a brad while chiseling out a hinge mortise.
In the rear of the above image you can see a picture of a finger that someone tried to cut off using a tablesaw (I stole this picture from a post on WC) - it's a good reminder for myself and the kids to be careful with the tablesaw.
