>I've read alot(lurked) about dovetail saws and the benefits of a #4 1/2 plane on WC and other forums. So thank you all for your time and input.

I placed the order today with Fine Tool Journal for a LN dovetail saw and LN 4 1/2 plane with York pitch frog. I am looking forward to learning how to hand cut dovetails. I already have an army of planes but the 4 1/2 will replace the first plane I purchased. A new Stanley #4 from Lowes. I just can't coax out decent performance from this new plane. The old stanleys I've picked from ebay work much better with little effort.

Thanks again for all the great debates it provides very helpful info.

>In the category of metallic smoothing planes, the Lie-Nielsen 4� is one of the best choices if it falls within one's woodworking budget. The blade is already quite sharp as delivered, but can be improved by additional fine honing.

My ten or more year old Record jack plane never felt as smooth as the $5 (or maybe less) post-WWII Stanley jack that I got, complete with dirt, at some garage sale and started using before even cleaning it (still haven't really cleaned it, because I don't use the No. 5 size a lot, preferring to go either larger to a No. 6 or smaller to a No. 4).

I'll keep you all posted on the 4 1/2. I may also request guidance on cutting the dovetails. We'll see. I watched Frank Klaus' video on cutting dovetails...what an inspiration.
