Cabinet Scraper

>I�ve recently discovered the joy of scraping using a scraper in the Vertis scraper holder. What is the difference between using the Vertis scraper holder and a cabinet scraper such as the Stanley # 80 as far as finish or rate of removal of material?

>You can put a lot more pressure on the scraper with the 80, 81, 12, and 112 (And several others, along with the Lee Valley and Lie-Nielson) than you can with just a card holder or a card by itself. A good freshly sharpened scraper in a nice scraper plane will give big curly shavings compared to small shavings when hand held. Making sure the burr is at the right angle if you use a burr in a scraper plane is somewhat critical.

If you have questions after that, just ask away. The only thing that I have to add is that the usable edge on an aftermarket blade from Ron Hock will last a lot longer than anything you can do with a stock Stanley blade, at least of the more recent vintages. If you have an older one, it might be just fine.
