>I like to add a leather washer between the handle and the bolster, most old mortise chisel handles are oval shaped so i don't worry about fitting a ferrel to end of handle.

You really only need couple holes to get tang started into handle, then just burn it on,do wrap the blade from bolster to end in wet rag.

I like to do this in 2 to 3 steps and let things cool between times.
