Saw Vise--Where?

Saw Vise--Where?

All,

As threaten...er...promised here's my first question (of many to come) over here.

I got a Somex (sp?) saw vise from Lee Valley a couple years ago. I wasted my money. It's useless. I'm now looking for a GOOD saw vise.

I remember seeing them, lots of them, for sale somewhere. I thought I had that site bookmarked, but I haven't been able to find it.

Does anyone know where they carry old, GOOD saw vises?

Many thanks in advance,

Alan

If you want an old one, try a flea market or the like. I have seen a few at my local antiquers mall.

Pete Taran also sells them at Vintage Saws and you can also try eBay. Saw a lot there today.

Just picked up a NOS vice and a NIB stanley 42 sawset W/instructions for the Toddly sum of 18.07 plus shipping from E-bay.(I bought the 42 on advice from my friends on the Pond)

Wait a minute, was that the FIRST gloat?

Re: Saw Vise--Where?

Alan,

If you are going to be sharpening a lot of saws, a good cast iron saw vice is nice. If you only occasionally going to be sharpening your saws, just make up a couple of saw chops. They are hardwood boards (maple or beech) with the top edges chamfered and placed on both sides of the saw and the three pieces secured in a vice. It is not as easy as a saw vice but is just fine for infrequent sharpening.

I have a pair of boards with a couple of hollows shot in the top edges at an angle that gives me a chamfer for the file to clear plus the hollows collect the steel filings for making iron buff.
