The Big Advantages of Bamboo Flooring

Amit

The popularity of bamboo floors continues to rise as more and more homeowners search for greener alternatives to traditional hardwood floors. One of the biggest benefits of bamboo is its ability to regenerate so quickly, and another is the extreme toughness of strand woven bamboo. Its eco-friendliness is because bamboo is a grass and not hardwood. The bamboo plant can regenerate in as little as 5 years. Compare that to hardwood trees that can take over 30 years to grow before being harvested. Bamboo is simply some of the best flooring and a logical choice for homeowners who want the warmth and beauty of hardwood but don’t want to add to the destruction of the world’s rain forests.

Support the Appalachian Hardwood lumber industry

Bill Tindall, E.Tn.

The market for Appalachian red oak collapsed in 2008 and never recovered. I know some loggers and timber land owners that would be delighted to see less money supporting the Asian economy and more here in TN mts. buying our abundant hardwoods.

My floors are all durable last generations Appalachian hardwoods, and not grass.

We grow plenty of bamboo here in NJ. :D But it's probably not the right species for making flooring. The diameter is too small. :(

And it is an invasive that spreads rapidly and is almost impossible to eliminate once it gets started.

Maybe Amit would like to purchase an ad? We could use the ad revenue to help support this free forum. There are plenty of applications for bamboo. It can be machined with woodworking tools, and is no more difficult to work than Corian.

resins

I looked into this when planning our home construction several years back. As I recall the high use of resins in the bamboo flooring manu. process more than offset the alleged environ. benefits. Has that improved?

At least the hydrocarbons are going into resins and not being burned, and adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. :D

Bamboo is loaded with silica, and therefore very hard on your cutting tools and lungs.

Naked Advertisement?

If it walks like an advertisement, and quacks like an advertisement, . . .

Yes, it is an advertisement, but a subtle one. The link was hidden in his profile. But it did elicit a couple interesting replies, so I left it there. The OP has been notified and we'll be keeping an eye on any future posts.

It's always something.

I used 5/8 laminated T&G bamboo flooring to make panels for a tansu style chest of drawers. Very flat and stable with no seasonal movement. Great stuff.
