As if the bees did not have enough of a problem, enter this nasty fellow. So far, according to the article, it has only been seen in the northwest, and southwestern Canada. Let's hope the scientists can stop its spread. Jim

I heard the news but didn't read the article yet.

A few years ago I did read about a method Asian honeybees developed to protect their colonies from the hornets. The hornets first send out scouts to find a honeybee colony then report back to start the invasion. Some researchers discovered the honeybees would ball up on the scout and raise the temperature of the ball until it was about one degree higher than the temperature the hornet could take which happened to be a little below what the honeybees could take. The dead scout couldn't go home to report!

Maybe the US honeybees could hire some Asians consultant bees.

saw this same thing -the odds aren't in favor of the bees in the long run, but the defense is interest.

for anyone on the ground with any of these pests - I understand that yellowjackets and such (and hornets) can really be a threat if you have an allergy. Asian hornets are sometimes deadly.

But there is one activity that I like to engage in when invaders are around - badminton with bees and wasps. I've gotten stung many times, but never during bee badminton. The stinging always occurs when I discover yellowjacket nests by disturbing something above them.

Another excellent way to get lots of stings is to disturb a big white-faced hornet's nest while bush hogging. In the summer I wear a net over my hat that covers my face and neck, long sleeves/long pants, and gloves. And carry a can of wasp/hornet spray on the tractor.
