Sander: motor sheave size

Last week I sold a fuel pump that I didn’t need for $20 and then bought a 1955 model Toro belt sander. It’s a 4x36
There is a 2” sheave on the sander and a four size sheave on the 1725rpm motor
What pulley should I use on the motor?

If the motor has enough power I would go with the largest, which would sand faster. However if it chokes the motor down, you’ll need to slow it down to get more torque.
Nobody can answer your question without knowing the hp, or the sizes of the other pulley.?

I think I’ll Mount the motor for the largest and allow for using a smaller sheave

You may find that 1/4 hp is a bit underpowered so I'd start small. Some with that size sanding belt use 3/4 hp.
