Working End of Brace

Somehow over the years the V clamp and screw on cover that grips the tapered square end of an auger bit has been lost. Would anyone have in their junk drawer a brace with other damage and be willing to sell this assembly? I would be happy to pre-pay, including shipping and handling. Thanks

What style of brace? Who made it? A picture would be helpful. There are quite a few variations in brace styles.

I am a carpenter by trade.Also a handyman/Jack -of-all-trades.I work around my neighborhood mostly helping people keep up their old houses.I have a fairly large woodworking shop in my house where I work with both hand and power tools. At the moment I'm focusing on Windsor chairs building.I will build most anything if needed. I'm always learning,adapting,changing trying to broaden my woodworking skills.I work mostly with hand tools in my shop but will use power if it is a better way to get the desired result. My wife,Donna,and I live in the woods of Maine with our dogs,cats,and birds. We have 5 grown kids and six grandchildren. Woodcentral has been central to my growth as a woodworker. I pass through this place every day.

I’m a fairly spry 82-year-old who had been a reader/participant at WoodCentral since the demise of Badger Pond. I started visiting BP to learn something about finish for a project I’d completed and became hooked on internet forums as a way of increasing my knowledge about all sorts of topics. I have been a moderator for a couple other forums on subjects I enjoy. My interest in woodworking began in the early 1970’s when my wife and I had contractors add to our house near Traverse City, MI, and I ended up doing the trim work to reduce mounting costs. I had no tools. I bought a P-C skilsaw, hammer, screwdrivers and one of those wooden miter boxes with a backsaw. I made trim for windows and doors from one-by lumber and started my woodworking career. At the same time, I started a 50-year career as a ski instructor. I got onto the night shift at a mental hospital so I could ski days, and spent my 30s and 40s with that schedule. I eventually replaced the PC-upside-down-in-a-board with a real table saw and began the purchase of enough equipment to fill a jam-packed 40-foot shipping container we used after we sold our property in Michigan. The ski instructing had taken us to Colorado and we were spending too much on maintaining utilities for two homes. A couple years ago, the dozen years spent at 10,000 feet of elevation was making my body produce too many red blood cells, so we had to leave my “forever” home in the mountains and we moved back to Michigan. Now I have to find myself a shop space for all those tools in the container.

Don, you can post an image from the drive on your computer. To do this, look just above the box where you type your text and you should see - Upload embedded file: Click the Browse button and navigate to the location of the image on your computer and select it.

I live in Mechanicsville, VA (not far from Richmond) and I've been building furniture and cabinetry for well over 20 years now. It all started with my frustration of not being able to cut a straight line with a hand saw. About this same time, a guy named Norm appeared on my local PBS station. The more I watched, the more I learned. I also started thinking, "Hey, I can do that"! And so, I began with small projects and soon found myself moving up to increasingly advanced work. Word of mouth started the ball rolling and before I knew it, I was building all kinds of things for people. While this is not what I do to pay the bills, it has provided me with a means of equipping my shop over the years. The main downside to all of this is when my wife looks at a finished project and says, "I want one of those" and I know I don't have the time to make that happen right then. I take advantage of any slack time between commissions to work on things we want and this seems to keep her "on my side". She even surprised me one day with a new Tormek sharpening system. Sometimes it pays to leave that tool catalog lying around open! For me, woodworking is a type of therapy. I can go out to the shop and totally forget about the world outside. There have been days when I get out there early and before I know it, it's dark outside and I have no idea where the time went! I also enjoy challenging my skills and learning new things. Most of the time, since the majority of my work tends to be custom pieces, I'm working on projects I�ve never built before. While this takes me longer than if I were doing production work, I find it more appealing because there's always something new to learn. I haven't had any formal training in woodworking. My teachers have been experience, the many books and magazines I've read, WoodCentral, and of course, a guy named Norm.

Folks, I've got to apologize for the ancient file size limitations we've endured here for twenty years. Mark N. is exactly right in saying that, given the enormous increase in internet bandwidth, we should be able to accept even camera images.

But, we can't. I don't have a technician who is capable of diving into the arcane scripts that run our messageboards to somehow increase the file size limits. The last known expert on this software lives in northern Germany and has been incommunicado for the past eight years. I know how, theoretically, it is supposed to be done, but I tried to do it myself once and failed. I can't risk breaking the board, so I'm asking everyone to write off the inconvenience. I'll try reaching out to a contact of mine in Australia who may be of some assistance.

You folks who have been with me for a long time know that we have consistently wrestled with the possibility of moving into a different forum software package, but that we've always resisted leaving this old Perl-driven BBS package because of its unique display, with the threaded messages in full view. Previous votes on the subject have always favored our quaint format, although I know we've lost visitors to sites with more conventional forum software. Somehow, though, we have retained the personality and high level of expertise that we've always had here. Your continued participation and support are what keeps us going strong.

So, let's not let file size limits get in the way of the sharing of experience here. If you don't have an image processing program, you can easily use one of the web-based picture resizing programs to get your large camera images down to a perfectly acceptable size for uploading here, or maintain a folder of your photos on the web somewhere and link to the images there.

Again, I apologize for any inconvenience.

That looks like a Millers Falls #2 egg beater. If you are just missing the knob and bolt, it would be easy enough for me to turn you a replacement, except for one problem. Right now, mine is in VA, while for the foreseeable future I'm hunkered down on the Cohansey in NJ. If we manage to come out of this pandemic alive, remind me.

Don,the reason I asked about the manufacturer is that I have alot of braces. Some just for parts but they all have different mechanisms for holding the bit so in order to know if I have your part I need more info.

Well, the arm is a horse of a different feather. I'll have to look at mine to see if it is easily reproducible. It may be as easy as cutting it out of a flat bar of steel and drilling a couple of bolt holes in it.

I work as a Medical Imaging Tech for a living but that's just so I can light and heat the shop and buy more tools. I've been turning since 2000 and it has changed my life. I never had a creative outlet before I discoverd Woodturning and now I can't get enough. After I turned my first pen, my wonderful wife saw how excited I was and bought me a mini lathe. She now refers to herself as a "Turning Widow". She is a potter and quilter so she understands the obsession. My interests in turning are many and varied and I'm sure I will not live long enough to try everything I'd like to, but I'll give it a shot. Unfortunately we don't have any children or pets so you'd think I have all kinds of free time to turn, but for some reason I don't. I belong to the Adirondack Woodturners Association in upstate New York, the Mohawk Valley Woodturners, the Old Country Guild of Woodturnes and AAW, as well as the Northeastern Woodworkers Association. Actually, the one I have has the jaws held in differently than most. I did some Googling around and took mine apart and the spring configuration is quite a bit different than "normal". I can send you more photos if needed.
