attaching the backs of roubo tops to the base

I've been plugging away at my new workbench (thanks to the help on a couple questions over the past month) and got the through mortises completed on the tops this weekend and just put a coat of finish on the base. I'm going to have to add a couple small filler wedges in a couple spots but all in all I'm pretty happy with my 1st through mortises...
These tenons are pretty substantial at ~1.5" thick, 5" long and go through the 4 5/8" thick ash top. I've seen some people use lag bolts to attach the backs of the tops to the base but I was thinking that these things are big enough that I may just let them float on the top stretchers. Am I setting myself up for problems by not attaching the backs of the tops?
