Box store Clamps

And plywood. I’m stuck in my winter home in Florida. Figured it may not be wise to motor home back to Alaska for obvious reasons. Decided to build some more cabinets for my Sister in law down the street to keep busy. Making her a nice big 36x75 pantry. HD is the only place I can purchase plywood around here. No problem. Bought some actual 3/4 sanded from Ecuador. Lightest sheets I’ve ever used. All was well till I started attaching drawer slide hardware. This stuff won’t hold the 1/2 “ screws normally like I'm used to. Just got gotta snug m up and hope they hold. What’s this stuff made of? Another thing I notice is their name brand clamps don’t seem to be of the same quality as the same clamps I’ve been using for years in Alaska. Anyone else notice a difference in box store clamp quality? Just a soft rant.

Check Lowes

Mark Mandell - Gone Round In New Jersey

They carry a line of Canadian maple ply; not "commercial cabinet grade" but much better than the Orange Borg stuff.

Can't speak to their clamps, I don't buy such from them.

Found complaints about that plywood in 2005

Dick Coers

Everyone must not be unhappy with it since they've been selling it for at least 15 years!

Plug and glue

I am not sure this would work, but where ever you need to put a screw maybe drill a larger hole and glue in a plug of Pine or another wood to hole the screw. Might take a bit longer to make them, but you should be safe with the screw not pulling out.

Euro style hinges sometimes come with plastic plugs that the screws go into. You drill a larger hole (10mm???) and press the plug into the holes and then screw into them.

OTOH I think the MDF screws mentioned above would be the easy answer. I used a few and they worked well.

Thanks for the help. Tried different screws with satisfactory results. This is the first time I’ve ever used box store 3/4 plywood and I’ve been a hobby woodworker a lot longer than 15 years. Box store was the closest place in my county here in Florida. Only 3 cases of virus reported here so far as opposed to over 900 2 county’s away (1 hour)where I usually purchase my plywood. Just being careful and attempting to keep my sanity doing a little woodworking. Thanks again.

Something else that helps, put your screw in and cut the threads and then remove the screw and drip a little thin C A glue into the hole and let it dry, it hardens the fibers up and helps to let the screw grip without stripping out so easily.

Which clamps?

JL

I got a nice set of smaller Bessey F-clamps at my Home Depot for a reasonable price. I haven't had a single issue w/ them. Good sturdy smaller clamps.

The clutch material on some of those is questionable. They'll start slipping. Take 'em apart and turn the clutch around and they'll start slipping again.
