wiring question

howgor

just got a samgold variable switch but I am not enough of an electrician to know the symbols for wiring it to the motor. The symbols are tilde ~with with two terminals marked AC(this should be for line power?), a circle with a M in it and one terminal marked A + and H -, and two terminals marked pw. The motor has a hot, neutral and ground wire. Not sure is the ground goes to the switch or if I should pigtail it to the ground from the line. Any help with this would be much appreciated. Thanks

Does it look like this on the back?

Yes Exactly

The two terminals labelled AC with the tilde ~ are for the 120 volt line power. The tilde means alternating current.

A ground wire must always be connected even when a switch is turned off.

The two terminals at the bottom marked PW have the symbol for an electrical switch next to them.

That concludes what I know for sure. Maybe the M in a circle represents the motor. Since the terminals marked A and H have positive and negative signs the power out may be direct current. Do you have some kind of electrical tester that can tell you whether the output is AC or DC? It may turn out you need a DC motor of some kind. That's beyond my experience.

Take you piece to a local electrical supply house and ask them a) how to wire and b) if you need anything else for the job.

The M in a circle is pretty typical notation for a motor. The +/- indicate a DC motor to me - previous discussion makes me think a DC motor is what he has, but given the hot/neutral nomenclature used in the OP that would be worth confirming.

I definitely agree with putting a meter on the output. Good reality check.

Those switches are often used to control gym treadmills.

AC power connection, (M)otor connection. PW is the emergency stop connection.

You are in way over your head, get professional advice.

variable DC pwr supply

Interesting that you would get this as a switch and not know that it's basically a AC to DC power supply. Is there is a knob on the front? If so, it varies the DC output. No specs as to the output voltage? AC in, DC out and PW, as was stated earlier is an emergency stop if wired with the right switch. This will only power a DC motor of the right voltage. More going on here then meets the eye, getting help is probably a good idea.
