OT Resticking peal and stick tile????

Barry Irby

My rental house has Peel and stick vinyl tiles in the kitchen. Some of the tiles have loose corners. Is there anything I can do to re-stick them without replacing them? (I can't find exact replacements.)

Is there a glue? How about a drop or two of lacquer thinner under them to reactivate the glue?

PS, I did not install this crap.

Double backed duct tape

Dick Coers

Not carpet tape, but thicker duct tape. Incredibly sticky.

partial vouch for this stuff...

David Weaver

..only partial because I don't know how it will hold up to greasy steam, but...

..when I started making guitars, I followed instructions to use double sided tape as that's sort of the norm. I bought some of the strong stuff like suggested here and it's too much for templates. The amount of stick that it has is over the top, and the adhesive doesn't just let go right away - it stretches as you're pulling the template away.

I've gone to putting screw holes in templates where they won't show up on a guitar as the tape was just way too much.

Other options would be some of the thinner construction adhesive, but it would have to be spread thin enough that it won't leave lumps under the tiles.

Years ago, I talked to a flooring installer who said that on the occasion that he installed peel-and-stick that the homeowner had purchased, he would trowel down vinyl flooring adhesive like he would with a normal vinyl floor, basically ignoring their peel-and-stick "feature".

Heat reactivates contact and rubber cement, so try a heat gun to lift them out, if you need to do that to get something else under it.

Thanks, some good things to try....

Barry Irby

I have some industrial duty double stick tape, I may try that.

As an aside, the MDF doors on the cabinets have some sort of very thin printed faces. Thinner than contact paper. Many of them have slightly puffy faces along the top or bottom edges. I have made a little "rail" with a rabbet in the back. Set up a router to cut a very light rabbet in the door to match, eliminating the puffy part. Going to stick them on with some of the tape and glue in the door rabbet. They will also serve as a pull. Will seal the edge with CA glue.

Lacquer thinner is a very strong solvent and could damage the tiles. I like the heating suggestion. If you have a not too big roller it will help to concentrate the force when you are pressing the tile down after the heating.
