Completely OT Phone charger question

Barry Irby

I have a new IPhone. My son gave me a charging disk you lay the phone on. Sorta works but not really. The phone is in an OtterBox case. I suspect the case interferes. Plugging the phone in directly works fine.

Anyone have experience with this and know a perhaps more powerful charger that would work reliably?

Yup the case

Howdy your phone case is to thick and it stops the wireless charging circuit. Think of it like two little magnets. You place them together with nothing in between and they stick together. Now slide a piece of plastic in between and they don't hold so well. If the plastic is thick enough and the magnets are small enough they do not stick together at all.

I've never understood the allure of that style of charger. Plugging in a cord is too time consuming? But I also discovered that lint can get in the charger port on my iPhone. Cleaned that out and got a more reliable charger connection as well.

They have an advantage over cords, in that the cords can fail prematurely and without warning. Some brands are much less reliable than others. It is no fun to grab your phone on the way out the door in the morning and find it has insufficient charge to even get Google Maps to lunch, much less home again in the evening.

Magnetic Chargers ?

Yonak

I keep seeing ads for magnetic charging devices that you only plug into your phone once and it stays there. I've heard that regular plugging and unplugging can wear the connections and cause slow charging or failure. Does anyone have experience with these magnetic systems ?

My Samsung 10e in an Otterbox works with the Samsung wireless charger if the phone is positioned just so. There is a sound when charging begins, so if I don't hear the chirp after a few seconds I reposition the phone on the charger. Apparently the "sweet spot" in the back of the phone is not overly large.

Probably a combination of phone, case and charger. I've had two phones with wireless charging, a Google Nexus and now a Pixel, and both charge fine while inside some seriously heavy-duty cases on three different wireless chargers. The newer Pixel 3 makes a little noise when wireless charging begins and it does so when it is within a 3-4mm of the case back making contact so there is some range there. I'd try a different charging pad before giving up -- yours might just be puny.

Indeed. Many old chargers, if something so new can be called old had very small coils as did some of the original wireless-charging phones. New charging pads tend to have larger or multiple coils and are far more forgiving. Knowing where the coil in the phone is is important but, once learned, the instinct of where to place the phone becomes automatic.

I use wireless charging especially on my nightstand where, if an emergency call came in the middle of the night bypassing my do-no-disturb setting, I'd probably strangle myself with a corded charger or at least break something fragile in the fog of waking.

I have two different ones, and don't have a problem--even with an Otterbox on the phone. I have a stand style charger on my nightstand that holds the phone upright, and is just about foolproof (off-center may not charge, but there's a little play there). The other is the flat disc style on my coffee table in the man cave. That one, there is a sweet spot, but it's large enough that it's not too tricky to hit. It also has an LED on the base that confirms when the phone is properly placed and charging is about to begin, followed shortly by the phone's normal indication.
