Buckaroo, I had this problem a year ago. You do not say what you are using, but in my case it was a new 2018 MacBook Pro. I referred to the issue as a ghost writer. It was not a joke, however, as I spent as much time repairing text in professional reports as in writing.

After completing a number of Google searches, it became apparent that many of the new generation MacBooks had this issue. The problem lay with the change of design in the keyboard (to fit the thinner laptops), and the keys were ultra contact sensitive. After some to-and-froing, Apple agreed to replace the laptop for a new 2019 model. This has been fine.

If you are running 2007 software, it is probable that you do not have a recent Mac. But it is possible that you have a problem keyboard. Have you changed it for another?

I use a laptop with a touchpad in front of the keypad. It is maddening the number of times that the cursor jumps. Apparently, one of my palms hits the touchpad and causes the jumps. I have not found a solution other than trying to keep my hands from resting on the areas in front of the keyboard. Frustrating.

You aren't alone!!!! Subject line is unfair to MS Word, it isn't the problem, the hardware is and it happens with various programs.

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop with Windows 10.

One solution that helped a bit was to put a piece of cell phone plastic screen protector on the touchpad to reduce its sensitivity (I assume).

Best result was getting into the setup for the Dell touchpad and disabling any features you don't need and maximizing things like palm rejection. It has now become not too bad. Prior to changing the settings I was going to throw the thing into the street.

Make sure you turn off gestures on the touchpad.

The touchpad can be de-selected in SETTINGS....DEVICES....TOUCHPAD. My Windows 10 allows deselection of the touchpad when a mouse is connected. After reading the responses here, I tracked through some of the options in SETTINGS until I found the sequence above and deselected the pad. Seems to be working...or not working, as it may be!

If using a laptop, get a mouse and disable the touch pad.
