My 1st Raised Panel

I am in the process of making an urn for a friend's dog and made this panel for the top. It's Red Oak with some flame figure from a scrap of t&g flooring I have had for a long time. I did all the raising with hand tools-#3 bench plane, #92 & #93 shoulder planes, and a LN block plane. It's only about 5" x 6".
I am pleased with the result. The box is almost finished and will be delivered later this month. Bush Oil finish.

and you have used it in an artistic, dynamic way.
Trimming the starting piece so the flame runs diagonal was a wonderful choice.

... and visually very tasty. No machine could have given you the surface quality I'm seeing in the photo. Great work, Don.
Question: When you make the rest of the box, will it be glued up with the cremains inside, or will it have a working lid?

Thanks everyone. I don't do much flat/square work-mostly turning. But I do enjoy working with hand tools.
Ellis, There is a sliding panel in the bottom that will be pinned in place with matching splines in the mitered corners and will not be removable, but not glued in.
I'll try to get a pic of the finished box shortly. Just finishing the finish.

So here is a photo of the finished urn for my friend's dog. It's about 5.5" x 6.5" and about 4" high. Mahogany with Sapele splines and Oak top. As you can see there is a sliding panel in the bottom that will be pinned in place, once the ashes are inside, with matching splines and will not be openable. Finish is Minwax wipe-on poly-many thin coats. I sent them a photo and they are pleased. I don't do much flat/square work because I don't do it very well, but I am happy with how this came out. I did a test piece/mock up 1st to check my processes and am glad I did. I built a jig to do the slots in the miters on my router table.

A small object like this one all hinges on crisp joints and you got them. I find its purpose kinda creepy but it's a nice box. A variant would make a dandy "beads of courage" box for the children's hospital.
