I believe the purpose of a "female adapter" is to convert a male port to a female port. If this is the case, the adapter would need a female 4" port on one end to fit the male 4" port on the appliance, and a female 4" port on the other end to accomplish the adapter's purpose.

If you go to Woodcraft, Rockler, etc., you are probably looking for something like this:

If you go to the home center, you might find that a "street" coupler for 4" DWV will fit your needs.

In any case, take examples of as much of what you need to connect with you, for experimentation.

trying to connect my flex hose (4" from dust collector) to my 4" drum sander.

I have been able to work 4" flex hose over metal 4" flanges and hold in place with large radiator/band clamps.

Michael, if the connctor is made of plastic/PVC, use a hot air gun to heat it up enough to stretch the end over- or shrink it into your hose or machine connection.

I have fiddled with this a lot. Bought four inch S& D pipe at the big box stores. They have flared ends that have been useful. Also used the bandsaw to slot the ends like fingers and hose clamps to compress them to fit. Used a heat gun to both expand them and shrink them. And tape to build up the diameter of the male part and to seal the join. Incidentally, if you cut the fingers on the bandsaw, be very careful, it will grab it and throw it. DAMHIKT Lots of Old Man engineering.
