I had called all the local yards before posting here. One of them has Western Red cedar siding in stock, so I took a chance and drove to them to see how bad a color mismatch would be. It is just a bit darker then what I have but should work. My wife is going to white wash it, and it will be a small section below a window so it should not stand out so much.

What is White Cedar siding ?

Coming from the way far north "white cedar" is known to me as an uncommon wet environment tree that doesn't grow large and is as knotty as red cedar. I can't imagine any sort of siding coming from it. Must be something else is called white cedar. Or is "white cedar siding" siding made from white sapwood of some rot resistant species?

it always comes as shakes. This is planked. I am not sure it is white cedar, it looks like the shakes I used to see all the time. I see it is not a common wood to this area so I must be wrong (don't tell my wife I said that). I am not sure what it is but the western red siding looks close enough for me not to worry about figuring out what it really is.

Northern White cedar is split into shakes. I have seen the operations in Ontario where it grows more commonly.

Curious fact. There is a period when white cedar shows up in furniture. These split shingle billets were imported into Philadelphia in colonial times for roofs. Cabinet makers spied an opportunity to use these billets to fashion drawer sides from, as we were shown in a tour of the Philadelphia museum.

There are two species of white cedar in Eastern North America, Thuja occidentalis, Northern White Cedar, and Chamaecyparis thyoides, Atlantic White Cedar. Both are rot resistant.

The Atlantic species grows in mostly swampy areas on the Atlantic seaboard. My house is sided in this species, mostly, but when I can't find it, I've replaced it with Thuja plicata, Western Red Cedar.

Atlantic and Northern can be easily distinguished in plank form by odor. Atlantic has a sweet smell, while Northern has a medicinal smell.

There are a couple of small sawmills in South Jersey that carry AWC sporadically.
