power planer needs replacing

The main shaft of my planer is damaged. The keyway slot got chewed up . I managed to get it working but I'm sure it will fail eventually. The part is not available so I need a new planer at some point in the near future. I'm looking at the 22-590 Delta. My planer is a 13" two speed 22-580 that I bought alot of years ago. I don't need two speed but I do need 13". Anyone have any recommendations on other models?

Buy one of the old cast iron Delta or Powermatic 12 or 13". tune it up and it will last generations. Even better would be an 18".

That is a great idea. In almost 20 years of woodworking,however, I've never seen one for sale anywhere. Where do people look for such machines?

I have had a DW735 (DeWalt) for many years. I have been generally happy with it.
Do you want/need a helical head for your planer? Are you doing a lot of figured woods?
The two speeds on the DW735 (and the three knives) give a reasonable surface.

Dealt dw734. I had a 22-580 first, also. Generally happier with the dw734, but it's similar. 4 post with locking cutterhead.

I have heard about the dewalt. I'll look at it a bit. I don't need any helical knives. I don't care alot about the finish left by the planer as long as it doesn't leave deep snipe or tearout. I use it as a thicknesser. I finish surfaces with hand tools.

I use a 4" hose on mine with a 2 horse dust collector dedicated to the planer. Works great. How is the Dewalt on dust collection? 4" outlet?

Loctite makes some amazing repair materials. Not just the thread locker that we all know.
Years ago I had a head bearing on a 12" chuck n duck brush chipper spin on its 3" shaft. It galled a lot of the shaft but left about 1/8" to index the new bearing. The bearing itself is about 8x2 or so...a biggun. I cleaned the shaft and bearing then used the primer. Just like any glue-up I did several dry runs to fine tune the setup. Strong tape and clamps held it in place.
I used the chipper for another year before selling it. Years later I started a new job. The guy I sold the chipper to worked with me. He never had a problem with the bearing for another 3 years.
Chipping logs and brush sure has a bigger impact than on a keyway. Just a suggestion.

Ellis practically gave away an 18" with sharpening attachment recently. I would have driven from Maine to fetch it. They are that good. I have put tens of thousand feet through ours. It will never wear out. Snipe...never seen any. I thought it was a bird.

They show up on Craigslist on rare occasions such as the day after you buy your new machine.

I have a Dewalt 735. The machine is great, but Dewalt blades are crap. They’re soft, don’t hold and edge and are difficult to sharpen because they’re not adjustable. If you get one of these, Holbren makes much better straight blades. If you can afford it, a Shelix head is the answer.

Craigslist or ebay. There are also various machinery resale sites like xfactory, but I don't know if you'd find any deals there. Maybe the OWWM.com forum sales page.
I have a Powermatic 100 that I did not get a deal on, but I've never regretted buying it. I think I paid $600 20 years ago. Even if you don't get a bargain, these old machines are a pleasure to fix up (if needed) and use.
You also might be able to get someone to cut another keyway on the shaft, we've done stuff like that on hard to replace equipment at work. Not ideal, but possible, though this doesn't sound like a hard to replace planer.

Heh.... going to have to show that one to my machinist!
For Jack's application that stuff might do the trick though - with something probably not worth the cost of repairing right there is a niche for quick products like this.

You can probably have a new one made by a local machine shop. Or, since the problem is the keyway, you can probably have a machine shop cut a new keyway, on the other side of the shaft, 180 degrees from the bad keyway.

This is what actually happened to the keyway; The machine got noisier than usual while working and then suddenly the motor ran but not the planer. I took off the belt cover. The belt had come off completely but not damaged. The end nut was loose and when I removed it and pulled off the pulley the key fell out. The keyway sides were gouged out. 180 degrees over, the other keyway was also damaged(I don't have a clue how). The end of the shaft near the keyway was also chewed up. I noticed that if I turned the shaft so the keyway was up the key would stay in place til I could get the pulley back on. The key holds the pulley in place with just a little play. After tightening the nut and putting it back together the machine works fine. I don't have any faith in the lifespan of this anymore but will use it til it breaks.

I got aftermarket blades from Amazon - they work better and are less expensive.
They were the "Powertec" blades.

Dust collection is pretty good as long as something is providing a vacuum on the back side of the planer. I have mine hooked to a less strong setup, so I get some escaped dust and can't comment on whether or not it can make a really dust-free environment.
That's probably the biggest difference between it and the much more expensive 735, which creates its own significant dust exhaust pressure.
(well, you do get infeed and outfeed extensions standard on the 734, and for whatever reason, despite the high price, they used to charge extra for them on the 735).
Not sure about the price level on the 734 - it was $349 at home depot when I got mine. I'm not a "good" power tool user, or particularly careful, so I tend to buy something that won't keep me up at night if I just pretty much use it and shove material through it and end up breaking it.
