there are lots of suppliers on the net for vintage electrical cords. Query "vintage electrical cords. Any 15 amp rated cord will work. You probably need a replacement replica plug, or if restoration appearance is not necessary' any big box or hardware store can fix you up.\ with both cord and plug. very simple fix.

I think the best bet is to go shopping at the local thrift stores and find a newer toaster or iron and use its cord.

You need a heat restraint cord like this.

If it was mine I'd go for an authentic fix -- if the original had no polarity then the fix wouldn't. I've got a toaster circa 1935 that I need to repair and that is the way I'm going with it (if I ever get motivated enough). My problem is that the nichrome heating element is broken and I can't figure how to size the replacement wire to get the proper resistance.

Any 15 amp cord set will work Tom, polarized or not. Heating elements don't care. If you are trying to preserve the vintage aspect of the toaster you can buy cloth covered wire put your own plug on from the hardware store. The 6 foot pre-made cords seem a bit long which is why I would make my own cord more like 2'. Old cord had no polarity new one doesn't need it but if the plug is polarized it won't change a thing. Easy fix (Old Electrician here)

Thanks for the replies! I kinda like the idea of a cloth covered cord. There is an old time hardware store not far away. It even has sagging wood floors!

There is a big difference in it just working AND it working and being more safe.

Polarity is a safety feature and the toaster doesn't need it to work but safer is better, right!

Here is what you need to know about polarity.

On the plug that goes to the wall outlet the smaller prong is the HOT and the wider prong is common.

The wire that you connect to the smaller prong should go to the on - off switch in the toaster first. The switch is normally incorporated with the push down handle, so you'll have to study the mechanical workings of the handle to determine how it turns the toaster on and off.

The common wire will just go where the other old wire was connected.

What this does is make the whole toaster electrically dead when it is turned off, connect the wires the wrong way and the toaster is HOT when off and touching it and say the water faucet at the same time and it will ruin you day..

People being shocked and at times killed was what created polarity wiring.

We had the same toaster bought shorty after we got married in 1953. We used that one for many years and bought another one when we had a second place. Just a great toaster, both lasted many years, far superior to the crappy one we have now. Any recommendations for a replacement?

Years ago we had a toaster that had a considerable amount of plastic on it. One rainy day I am off to take a shower and my kids asked if they could make a Pop Tart. Yes. Minutes later, from the shower I hear a lot of frantic running around and they are screaming it's on FIRE. I run out, grab the toaster, run out on the deck, naked with shampoo in my hair, and fling the toaster out into the yard.

I have always wished that had somehow gotten filmed and been submitted to America's Funniest Home Videos.

Bought an all metal replacement.
