I somehow doubt you will find any of the European, Asian or African cedars - but who knows...

Atlas Cedar - North African cedar.

Cedar of Lebanon - Eastern Mediterranean

Cyprian Cedar - island of Cyprus, Turkey, etc.

Deodar Cedar - Himalayan cedar (Pakistan and Western Himalayan)

Western Red Cedar - west coast of US - most common lumber

Northern White Cedar - northeast coast of US and Canada - nice colorful wood but soft

Eastern Red Cedar - nice for cedar closets and liner for cedar chests - common

Yellow Cedar (Alaskan) - nice tight grains - good wood to work with

Spanish Cedar - not really a cedar (IMO) - but great for cigar boxes and humidors

I have worked w/ Western Red, Eastern Red, and Spanish. I have seen stuff made from the European, African, and Asian cedars.

If you are on the west coast - you probably have Western Red. East Coast - probably Eastern Red or imported Western Red. YMMV

I made a picnic table out of Spanish Cedar. The shop smelled great! It is actually in the Mahogany family. (Again, not a real cedar.) There are 2 types. I think the one with "Mexicana" in its Latin name is the better to use as it has less chance of gum pockets. Find someplace that sells it as lumber, not cigar box lining. MUCH less expensive! Advantage Lumber does. They are out of New York and will ship it to your door.

Mark Mandell - Gone Round In New Jersey

is sided with 6" t&g mill-select Eastern White (aka Atlantic White) Cedar. It's not aromatic as the reds, but has held up nicely for 35 years. I've seen much newer homes sided with Red turn black and have to be re-sided.
