Personally I think its a tossup. I have a Grizzly 8" joiner with the Grizzly segmented spiral carbide head and a 20" planer with the same style Byrd head. the finish is, as far as I can tell, the same! Both do a great job.

There is rarely ANY tear-out even with the most brittle figured wood. I have actually ran a completed paneled door through the planer one time (which meant the upper and bottom were ran cross grain) and didn't have any tear out or gouges!

Some years ago I replaced the cutter on my 6" Jet and called Byrd to order one, they referred me Grizzly, the cutter works great.
