OT - removing hearth from gas log fireplace..

We have a gas log fireplace in our living room. The front has a trapezoidal hearth jutting out into the room.
The LOML would like to see the hearth gone. As far as I can tell, the entire fire place is a framed structure that is clad w/ a layer of stone. The stone layer is mortared in place w/ some really wide (1/2" or more) mortar joints. Any suggestions on how to take off the hearth? I was planning on using a stone chisel and small sledge.

I'm at the age where swinging a sledge over my head is a task. An electric demo hammer rented from Home Depot or bought from Harbor Freight would be my choice..

it will come apart pretty easily. If you already have the hammer and chisel, give it a try. There is probably a top layer. try to get under it with the chisel and drive it in with the hammer. I think you will be able to pry it off pretty easily, or easier than if it were a solid masonry hearth.
And, if you get to wailing away on it, chips will fly. Might want to set of some sort of perimeter of cloth or at least a drop cloth. You may be finding chips for months.
OTOH, a demo hammer/drill will make short work of it.
