Bench Vice Advice
Mark Mandell - Gone Round In New Jersey
So the new shop needs a real bench vice. I remember that Record was once at of near the top of the pile, but does anyone here have experience with other brands and suppliers?
It's gonna be a 10" quick release type. Woodcraft carries about 8 brands, Rockler sells its own badge, and Amazon has several.

I have a big old vise a friend gave me (and can't find the pics now). It adjusts by a rack mechanism on the bottom of the vise rather than the typical screw and rods. I can take more pics when I get back to the shop, maybe Sunday.

I bought this vise around 1980 when it was made by Abernathy. No idea how time has changed quality, but mine is a workhorse.

Prices on used with questionable as to condition (hairline cracks in castings, for example) I found were almost equal to new. If it were cheap and/or local (searching estate, barn, garage sales) I'd take the risk as I'm over-budget on the shop already.
