If you don’t treat it with an insecticide preventive, you’ll be storing firewood. Ask me what it’s like to burn 5/4, 20” wide curly maple.

Yes, you'll need to Timbor everything to keep the bugs out. Won't, however, do a thing for the small mammals who'll love the lodgings.

You should note also that EMC outside (you being down Virginny-way ) is going to be up to twice what indoor storage will be. I've had 8k bf of red maple and walnut stickered and stacked in my half of the (unheated) garage for more than a year and the best it got was 15%. Cut to 11/8, it'll be a while before I can use it.

A "weird" idea. Adapt a solar kiln plan.

That would keep things dry and finish drying it to a reasonable level. You could put vents or shut down the fans to control the EMC. It would be enclosed storage, so it would keep down on critters inhabiting your stacks.
