Broom Making Equipment Plans?

Broom Making Equipment Plans?

Don Stephan

For the local school's annual 4th grade Pioneer Days week I am growing broom corn, and would like to make at minimum a foot controlled winder to make fireplace brooms. An hour on the Internet did not find any drawings or plans to make broom making equipment. Can anyone provide a link or other suggestion?

I would go to Folkschool.org and search for the broom making classes.

Perhaps one of the instructors might be able to help you in your quest.

Difficult one. The South Union Shaker Museum in Kentucky had, IIRC, authentic Shaker-ish broom-making equipment on display and would probably allow a close examination on request for serious historical research. Ditto, Berea College has a live working shop making just what you describe and they might be willing to allow examination. I've never seen plans anywhere but, of course, I've never done the digging it might require.

I was also going to suggest Berea College - I was in school there about 50 years ago and their broomcraft industry was turning out a wide variety of brooms. I'd call and find if someone is working there this summer. Or jump in the car, it's not an unreasonable drive from Cincinnati.
