Welcome to TN. Just leave any Yankee ways behind. We are fine with low taxes, less government intrusion, etc. It's called Federalism, a corner stone of the Constitution and the glue that stuck the disparate states together. Be observant at how people live their life and embrace it. BTW, you could have moved 200 miles farther east and found 6000' mountains.

For example:

If someone waiting on you addresses you as "Hun" know you are in good hands. By this term they have acknowledged that the are doing their best to serve you. We had a letter to the editor in the paper from some Yankee that moved here venting displeasure at being called Hun by people trying to help them.

When I call T-Mobile and get Richmond call center, and some middle aged Black lady starts her response with "Hun", stress drains from me for I know my problem is going to be solved if it can be.

Wife used to do delivery of our lumber. One business had a receiving person that even called the men delivering 'Hun". Again, it was not a put down to my wife. Rather it was a signal that she was going to be treated well.

This is the reason I am heading that way

I grew up in upstate NY but left in 1978 and never went back. While I was in the USN I was always stationed down south, so I know the life style. After I got out in 1998, was when I was back north because of work. I moved to Cleveland in 2005 and have been waiting to get close to retirement so I could move to my retirement home.

Now to find the woodworking club and quilting club for my wife.

I will leave my northern ways up north and only use them when I come back this way for work.

I'm a fan of civility and southern "charm", but lets not stray into political issues here on WC. The meaning of "Federalism" and interpretation of our Constitution will have disparate meanings for lots of folks both north and south of the Mason-Dixon and WC is not the place to air those opinions along with other topics that will distract us from the valuable woodworking discussions posted here most every day.

This is not a "P-C" concept, guys, but rather a reminder of the WC Terms of Use that have kept this moderated forum running smoothly for 20(?) years.

15 miles to the mountain.

I used to live at 10000 feet and drove 1.5 miles to the ski area parking lot, but the lack of oxygen at 10000 feet made my body create too many red blood cells, so the cardiologist made me move.

One has to wonder...

If commentary like Bill's would be controversial if those persons who dislike seeing it would just take a "well, takes all kinds I guess" mentality and leave the moderation to Ellis and our moderator, who I trust completely to strike the right balance as they have always done in the past. Nowhere else on the internet have I seen such fair and moderate moderators, lets put our trust in their excellent judgement and do our own parts by not replying to those posts that we may personally feel overstep the bounds of political decorum.

Yes, welcome! I was born in Kansas, raised in Pennsylvania, and moved south to go to college. Been in TN since 1970 and love it. A lot of people are moving here from all over.

If you do any woodturning, there is a great turning club in Crossville. Several of us drive from near Knoxville to attend. The club in Knoxville is excellent too.

I will be looking into the turning club. I travel a lot for work right now, but we just hired another instructor to take up some of the load so I might be home more start the end of the year. I will look it up when I get there.

was not to suggest Bill's comment was improper to the point of being subject to deletion by Ellis of Bill, but rather that a bit of care be used to avoid unintentionally getting a fire started that would require moderator action. Given that netizens' feathers seem all too easily ruffled these days, especially when even a hint of politics gets raised, even by mistake, some self-moderation is a benefit, and sensitivity as to how what we write may be viewed by others is, at least in my view, an easy way to go.

Of course, your view may differ from mine, and that's fine.

BTW, I'm done so the last word is all yours.

The first weekend of November there is a juried show in Knoxville. It always falls on the 1st day of deer muzzleloader season so obviously I have never been. But someone from the club usually brings back pictures. Some high end stuff gets shown there.

I'm not talking about deletion - I'm talking about YOUR point. Self control and self moderation applies to YOU too, as it applies to me - I'm breaking that rule of etiquette for the same reason you do, but on the flip side of the coin.

It is all very well to claim that it is out of sensitivity to the easily ruffled feathers of a strawsnowflake, but really the reason is that Bill's ideas annoy you, just as yours annoy me. That is the reason each of us respond in the way we do. You call attention to what displeases you by your reaction to it, as does my reaction to your reaction. It never ends until we each exercise a bit of self control and refrain from responding to that which annoys us.

Why don't we all leave it to Bill H or Ellis to step in when either feels it is appropriate rather than do it for them? Both have virtually infallible judgement in my experience, we can trust them to do the moderation and save our argumentative sides for the important matters, like sharpening preferences or which saw blade is perfect for every task under the sun

I am originally from Cleveland. Moved to Knoxville in the fall of 79 for grad school at UT. What a differences from the 'city block slab of concrete' campus of the University of Cincinnati. Did not know anyone, thankfully I chose wisely and found some great people looking for a room mate. Many good times.

I would like to retire to Tennessee someday in the future. Working on that everyday.
