My son built me a computer. The sound is not loud enough for my aging woodworker's ears so I rummaged around and found some old Labtec speakers. They required four C Cell batteries. I left the speakers on all the time. The batteries lasted less than a month. I had assumed the speakers would draw little or no power while not in use. The batteries have a date of 2022 on them and have been in the drawer a while. I installed a second set, but those have been here a while also. I am trying to turn the speakers off when not in use, but that ain't happening on a regular basis.
So, the question is, do more modern speakers draw their power form the computer and not need batteries? What alternatives are there?
Barry, you may find that there is a DC power input jack on the speakers that would be powered by an external power supply - you know, the plastic blocks that plug in the wall. If there is then you need to find a suitable supply and that might not be easy.
You can also buy speakers that are powered via a USB plug. There a multitude of choices to put it mildly. You might glean some good info by searching Amazon or Best Buy to see what is available.
Barry, I haven't purchased speakers for computers in a long time so I'm not familiar with current offerings and can't make a recommendation. However, all three sets we have, including the one for my desktop with 4 speakers and a sub woofer, plug into an AC outlet.
I think those that are powered by a USB jack are probably your best bet and easy to find today.
I've found that lots of stuff on Amazon in their "Amazon Basics" line are good values -- everything from computer cables, to underwear, to shorts. They have some reasonably-priced USB-powered speakers in that house brand and they are probably worth consideration.
